No. 4 Cal Sweeps Big Row

May 4, 2024
Cal's first varsity eight battled tough conditions to help the Bears retain the Schwabacher Cup.

REDWOOD CITY – The No. 4 California Golden Bears men's rowing team swept both the V8+ and 2V8+ duals against No. 12 Stanford to win the Schwabacher Cup for the 10th straight year at the Big Row Saturday morning at Redwood Shores in Redwood City. The teams had to brave the elements as heavy rain came down throughout the day.

"I think the crews all managed the conditions really well," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "We made some progress in portions of the race that we've been working on, so I'm really pleased with what we got out of the weekend."

In the V8+ dual, Cal jumped out to a great start and quickly built an open water lead over the first 500 meters that grew to two boat lengths by the time the Bears hit the halfway point. Cal didn't allow Stanford to make up any of the deficit and cruised to the win in a time of 5:50.9, over 15 seconds ahead of the Cardinal.

In the matchup of the 2V8+, Cal quickly built a boat length of open water lead through the first 500 meters. That lead grew to two boat lengths of open water as the teams passed through the 1,000-meter mark. The Bears were able to control the remainder of the race and easily take the win in a time of 6:03.3.

Cal's 3V8+ and Freshmen 8+ also went head-to-head in the last race of the day which proved to be a close battle. The 3V8+ took a half-boat lead after the first 500 meters and went ahead bow to stern at the halfway mark. The freshmen, however, were able to maintain contact and made a move over the second half of the race and walked back almost a full boat but just got edged out by less than two seconds by the 3V8+.

The Bears will now have a week off to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma on May 19.
