Washington Topped 6-2 At Grand Canyon

May 7, 2024

PHOENIX – Washington ended its road trip in the desert on the wrong side of a 6-2 scoreline Tuesday, falling to Grand Canyon at Brazell Field.

Husky starter Spencer Dessart was effective but took a no-decision, delivering 4.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits and three walks, picking up four strikeouts along the way. Jase Evangelista wore the loss, allowing three runs.

After stranding a pair of runners in both of the first two innings offensively, Washington gave GCU the lead in the bottom of the second as a run came home on a double play turn.

The Huskies responded immediately, as Aiva Arquette led off the third with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Braeden Terry's ground ball.

The two sides traded zeroes for the next two innings before UW ran into some trouble in the sixth. Two walks sandwiching a single loaded the bases for the Antelopes' Tyler Wilson, who drove a grand slam over the fence in right-center to put GCU back up 5-1.

The Huskies got back on the board in the seventh on a Sam DeCarlo worm-burner that narrowly avoided the shortstop's glove, allowing Cooper Whitton to score. However, the Antelopes got the run right back in the home half with a sacrifice fly.

UW put runners at the corners in the eighth but was unable to capitalize as the Antelopes secured the midweek victory.

Washington returns to Seattle to close out its home schedule this weekend, hosting Oregon for three games Friday through Sunday at Husky Ballpark. All three games will be available on Pac-12 Washington.
