Cal Heads To Pac-12 Championships

May 8, 2024
Senior Rowan Hamilton, the current collegiate leader, is a heavy favorite to win the men's hammer title.

BERKELEY – The postseason is officially set to begin for California track & field this weekend with the Pac-12 Championships in Boulder, Colorado. Scheduled to start off with the women's javelin and heptathlon 100m hurdles at 10 a.m. PT on Friday and concluding with the men's 4x400m relay at 3:10 p.m. on Sunday, the three-day meet will include over 50 of the Golden Bears' top athletes. The Pac-12 Networks will broadcast all track events and select field events.

Cal finished the regular season with a total of 12 entries ranked among the conference's top three. Current Pac-12 leader David Foster will look to be the Bears' first 100m conference champion in history, while fellow leaders Rowan Hamilton (men's hammer) and Caisa-Marie Lindfors (women's discus) seek Cal's second-ever titles in their respective events. Skyler Magula, who won the Pac-12 championship in the 2023 men's pole vault competition, will take aim at becoming Cal's first man to repeat as conference champion since Tuomas Kaukolahti (triple jump, 2018-19) and the Bears' first pole vaulter to do so since Brent Burns (1991-92).

This year, Cal returns six medalists from 2023: reigning champion Magula (men's pole vault); runners-up Jada Hicks (women's 4x100m), Aysha Shaheed (women's 4x100m) and Carolina Visca (women's javelin); and third-place finishers Ivar Moisander (men's hammer) and Amari Turner (women's pole vault).

At last year's Pac-12 Championships, Cal's men finished fourth (82 points) and the women sixth (60 points). The 2024 Cal women are currently ranked sixth in the conference by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), but the Bears' men enter the conference championships in pole position on the men's list, where they have remained for the past five weeks. Should they take the team title, it would be Cal's first time doing so in any iteration of the Pac-12 and its first conference win since 1925, when the squad competed in the Pacific Coast Conference.
