Trojan Comeback Falls Short at Long Beach State

May 8, 2024

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The USC baseball team came back to tie it in the eighth, but eventually fell to Long Beach State on a walkoff single in the 12th inning on Tuesday night.

USC falls to 22-26 overall while Long Beach State moves to 22-22-1 on the year.

The teams traded runs in three separate innings, with USC jumping ahead 1-0 in the first, only to see the Dirtbags put up two in the bottom half of the inning. The Trojans again jumped ahead in the fourth, getting an RBI double from Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek and a run-scoring single from Carson Wells. Long Beach State once again took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to go up 5-3.

It was more of the same in the seventh, as USC scratched across a run to cut the deficit to one, but the Dirtbags got a solo-homer in the bottom half of the inning. The Trojans would load the bases in the eighth and Carson Wells hit a ground-rule double that tied the game at 6-6.

The two pitching staffs traded zeroes until the bottom of the 12th inning, when Long Beach State put runners on first and second, and got a walkoff single from Armando Briseno.
