SAN FRANCISCO -- As it embarks on its 100th year, the Pac-12 Conference has been defined by excellence and championships, and has been home to sports legends and superstars. The year-long celebration will include marking the date of the official formation 100 years ago on December 2, a commemorative logo, and special programming on Pac-12 Networks that includes All-Century teams in each sport. In addition, the Conference will release a series of This Month in Pac-12 History releases throughout 2015-16 academic year to highlight memorable moments that occurred in that month in the 100-year history.

This Month in Pac-12 History - May:
1978: On May 26, Stanford freshman John McEnroe Stanford defeated UCLA, 6-3, to win back-to-back NCAA men’s tennis titles.

1978: Henry Rono of Washington State set a collegiate record in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase on May 13 with a time of 8:05.4, a record that still stands today.

1985: UCLA’s Jackie Joyner-Kersee leaped a distance of 6.99m/22-11¼ on May 4 to set a collegiate record in the long jump, setting a mark that still stands 31 years later.

1990: Arizona State captured the first of its seven NCAA women’s golf titles with a 16-stroke victory over runner-up UCLA on May 26. That same day, Arizona’s Susan Slaughter became the first of four different Wildcat golfers to claim NCAA medalist honors as she defeated Texas’ Michiko Hattori in a playoff.

1991: On May 11 (and 12), Utah softball met Creighton in the longest softball game in NCAA history. The two teams went 31 innings with Creighton eventually taking the win, 1-0, with the game ending at 12:25 a.m. on the morning of May 12, six hours and 25 minutes after the first pitch. The game featured 220 at-bats with the starting pitchers going the distance for both teams. The Utes’ Janet Womack threw 320 pitches, while the opponent’s Kelly Brookhart tossed 390.

1995: USC’s Balazs Kiss threw an 81.94m/268-10 on May 19 at the Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, Ariz., to win his third of four hammer titles on May 19, setting the collegiate record which still stands today.

1996: Stanford’s Tiger Woods captured his first and only Pac-10 men’s golf title by 14 strokes as he shot 18-under at Big Canyon Country Club on May 1 in Newport Beach, Calif.

1999: Bill Scott of UCLA hit a home run in seven-straight games from May 8 to May 28, tying for the Conference’s baseball record.

2007: For the third-consecutive year, the UCLA women's water polo team hoisted the NCAA Championship trophy after defeating Stanford, 5-4, on May 13, also giving the UCLA athletics program an unprecedented 100th NCAA team title.

2009: Colorado’s Jenny Barringer ran a collegiate-record 15:07.64 in the 5,000 meter at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford on May 2, a time that continues to be the collegiate standard.

2013: On May 11, Arizona’s Brigetta Barrett sets the collegiate record in the women’s high jump, clearing 6-6.25 (1.99m) and claiming her third-straight Pac-12 title in the event. Barrett was a silver medalist in the event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, recording the highest jump of any collegiate women’s high jumper at 6-7 (2.03m), which also set the Pac-12 record.
