Washington men's and women's rowing secure fourth straight Pac-12 titles

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The WASHINGTON men and women swept the Pac-12 Rowing Championships for the fourth consecutive time, continuing their dominant runs atop the Conference at the 2021 edition at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma on Sunday. 

The UW men secured wins in all five of their events, winning their 40th Conference title overall with 72 points. The Huskies edged runner-up CALIFORNIA, which placed second for the fourth-straight year. The Golden Bears took second in all four events they raced in on Sunday morning. OREGON STATE was third with 47 points. The men’s field was rounded out by fourth-place STANFORD (42 points), men’s club champion WASHINGTON STATE (28 points) and OREGON (12 points). 

The Husky women won four of their five races to clinch the program’s 18th all-time Conference title, finishing with 44.5 points, just ahead of second-place STANFORD (40 points). CALIFORNIA took third with 31.5 points, as the Huskies, Cardinal and Bears finished 1-2-3 for the second straight Pac-12 championship. In a tightly-contested battle for the final spots, OREGON STATE (21 points), WASHINGTON STATE (20 points), UCLA (17.5 points) and USC (6 points) finished fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. 

The closest finish for the Husky men came in the third Varsity Eight race, with WASHINGTON clocking in at 5:57.616 and CALIFORNIA 5:59.856. The Huskies also edged the Bears in the Varsity Eight by 4.541 seconds. CALIFORNIA’s Varsity Eight has come in either first or second at nine consecutive Pac-12 Championships. 

The women’s race remained competitive throughout the morning, with STANFORD taking first place in the Varsity Four (7:24.809) and second in the Varsity Eight, second Varsity Eight and third Varsity Eight. In the final race of the day, WASHINGTON held off the Cardinal by 2.794 seconds, as the Huskies clocked in at 6:34.903. 

With its Conference win, the Washington women’s team will receive the Pac-12's automatic bid to the postseason, seeking to defend its 2019 NCAA title. The entire 2021 NCAA DI rowing championship field will be announced on Thursday, May 18 on NCAA.com. The championship finals will be held May 28-30 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.

For the Pac-12 men’s rowing programs, the 118th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta will take place May 28-29 on Mercer Lake in Princeton, N.J.
