Pac-12 with 136 entries at 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 will have 128 athletes scheduled for a total of 136 event entries in 39 events at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field from June 9-12.

The Conference will be seeking its 48th all-time men’s title and first since OREGON in 2015. Its 47 prior men’s outdoor championships are the most among all leagues, 19 ahead of the SEC, which is in second with 26. On the women’s side, the Pac-12 will be looking for its 10th title and first since USC won it all in 2018. The Conference’s nine women’s outdoor championships are the second-most all-time, trailing the SEC’s 22.

The 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships are the Ducks' first national hosting duties at the newly renovated Hayward Field. Between 2010 and 2018, Oregon hosted the NCAA Championships seven times. In addition to these NCAA Championships, Hayward Field is set to host the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials from June 18-27.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS – PAC-12 WOMEN’S PREVIEW

The Pac-12 will be represented by all 12 programs in 19 women’s events at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships – every event except the 800m and pole vault. In total, the league will have 75 event entries - 70 individual events and five relay teams – and is led by No. 2 nationally ranked USC, the three-time defending Pac-12 champions, which boasts 20 entries.

A Conference program will seek to hoist the hardware for the fourth time in six championship meets, following a USC victory in 2018 and Oregon titles in 2015 and 2017.

Four Pac-12 athletes enter the NCAA Championships leading the nation in four events. COLORADO’s Sage Hurta enters the championships seeking to become the eighth woman in NCAA history to complete the 1,500m and mile national championship double, after winning the indoor mile title on March 13 in 4:30.58. Hurta owns the No.1 1,500m time in the nation this season when she crossed in 4:08.38 at the Oregon Relays in late April. Oregon’s Jessica Hull is the last 1,500m champion from the Pac-12 (2018).

USC’s Anna Cockrell, the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and defending NCAA 400m hurdle champion, again leads the country in that event this season with her PR of 54.77 from the Pac-12 Championships in May. She’ll also run the 100m hurdles, an event where she’s No. 5 on the NCAA descending order list (12.79). USC’s Nia Ali is the Conference’s last champion in the 100m hurdles (2011).

In her first year stateside after completing her undergraduate studies back home in the Netherlands, ARIZONA STATE’s Jorinde van Klinken leads the world in the discus with a mark of 230-4 (70.22m) from the USATF Throws Festival on May 22 in which she competed unattached. The Pac-12 Women’s Field Athlete of the Year will compete for the Netherlands in the event in Tokyo. At the NCAA West Prelims, van Klinken threw a collegiate best 211-5 (64.44m) to punch her ticket to Eugene and is looking to become the Pac-12’s first NCAA discus champion since fellow Sun Devil Maggie Ewen in 2018. She’s also entered in the shot put this week, an event that has been won by a Pac-12 athlete in the last two NCAA meets.

CALIFORNIA’s Camryn Rogers, the defending NCAA hammer champion, leads the country in the event this season with a mark of 239-9 (73.09m) at the West Coast Classic at Hayward Field on April 17, the No. 2 toss on the Pac-12’s all-time top-10 list.

In addition to Cockrell and Rogers seeking to defend their titles, USC sprinter Anglerne Annelus is the two-time defending NCAA 200m champion and is attempting to become the second person to win the event three times (Kimberlyn Duncan – LSU). ARIZONA’s Samantha Noennig won the 2019 NCAA shot put title while competing for ASU and is No. 4 on the NCAA descending order list this season.

The Conference has an active streak of at least one women’s event champion in 33 consecutive NCAA meets dating back to 1987, the first year of Pac-12 women’s track & field, with a high of 10 event champions at the 1998 event in Buffalo, N.Y.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS – PAC-12 MEN'S PREVIEW

The Pac-12 will be represented by all 10 men’s programs in 20 events at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships – every event except the pole vault. In total, the league will have 61 event entries – 56 individual events and five relay teams.

The Pac-12’s top representative is also the league’s highest ranked program with No. 2 Oregon securing 16 event entries, while No. 3 USC is close behind with 14 event entries. The 14-time defending Conference champion Ducks will be searching for their first national crown since claiming back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015. The Trojans won the most recent of their 26 NCAA titles in 1976.

Three Pac-12 athletes enter the NCAA Championships leading the nation in four events. A two-time Pac-12 800-meter champion, USC’s Isaiah Jewett ran a 1:45.16 PR at the Pac-12 Championships in mid-May. The NCAA-leading time is No. 7 on the Pac-12’s all-time performers’ list and was the Conference’s fastest in nearly a decade, since Oregon’s Elijah Greer finished third at the 2011 NCAA Championships in 1:45.06. Greer is the Pac-12’s most recent NCAA 800m champion, winning the event in 2013 (1:46.58).

Oregon’s Cole Hocker leads the field in the 5,000m after running 13:19.98 at the Oregon Relays in late April. Hocker, who completed the mile/3000m double at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, is looking to become the first man in the history of the outdoor championships to win both the 1,500m and 5,000m in the same year. He will have just under two hours between races on Friday if he makes it through the 1,500m semifinals on Wednesday. Hocker’s 1,500m time of 3:36.47 is No. 4 in the nation this season. The Pac-12’s most recent 1,500m title came in 2014 (Mac Fleet – ORE) and a Conference athlete has won the 5,000m in six of the last seven NCAA meets (2013-18).

After winning an NCAA indoor shot put title three months ago, Arizona State’s Turner Washington has put together an outdoor campaign that sees him top the country in both the shot put (69-1½/21.07m) and discus (217-5/66.26m), victorious in each of those events in which he’s competed this spring. He broke the ASU discus record three times, has hit the Olympic standard in the event and picked up USTFCCCA Male Athlete of the Week honors three times. ASU’s Jordan Clarke (2012) is the last Pac-12 NCAA champion in the shot put and UCLA’s Julian Wruck (2013) is its most recent discus winner.

No Pac-12 man competing in Eugene this week has previously won an individual event title at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Pac-12 has an active streak of at least one men’s event champion in 60 consecutive NCAA meets dating back to 1960, with a high of 10 event champions at the 1968 event in Berkeley, Calif.
