Arizona's Mathurin headlines Pac-12 Men's Basketball's six picks in 2022 NBA Draft

Jun 23, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO - 2021-22 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Year Bennedict Mathurin of ARIZONA headlined the Conference's six selections in the 2022 NBA Draft on Thursday.

The Pac-12's six selections were split between the First and Second Rounds, giving the Conference at least three First Round picks for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons.

The Conference has now produced 78 total NBA Draft selections, including 44 in the First Round and 17 in the Lottery, in the Pac-12 era (since 2012); it marked the eighth time over the span that at least six Pac-12 stars were taken in the Draft.

Round / Pick Player School NBA Team
1 / 6 Bennedict Mathurin Arizona Indiana Pacers
1 / 18 Dalen Terry Arizona Chicago Bulls
1 / 30 Peyton Watson UCLA Oklahoma City Thunder
2 / 33 Christian Koloko Arizona Toronto Raptors
2 / 49 Isaiah Mobley USC Cleveland Cavaliers
2 / 57 Jabari Walker Colorado Portland Trail Blazers

Mathurin was the first Conference standout chosen with the No. 6 overall pick by the Indiana Pacers.

  • At No. 6 overall, Mathurin is Arizona's highest Draft selection since Deandre Ayton went No. 1 overall to the Phoenix Suns in 2018.
  • Mathurin is the second straight Pac-12 Lottery Pick for Indiana after the Pacers selected OREGON's Chris Duarte at No. 13 in the 2021 Draft. Duarte went on to earn NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors during his debut 2021-22 season.
  • Mathurin is the 16th all-time Lottery selection for the Wildcats, the most among all Pac-12 members (UCLA - 8).

2021-22 Pac-12 All-Defensive Team performer Dalen Terry, Mathurin's backcourt teammate in Tucson, came off the board at No. 18 overall to the Chicago Bulls.

  • Marks the fifth Draft in which Arizona has multiple First Round selections (1989, 1998, 2015, 2020).
  • Though two enter this offseason as free agents, Terry's addition means the Bulls now have six former Pac-12 standouts on their roster (Lonzo Ball - UCLA; Troy Brown - ORE (FA); DeMar DeRozan - USC; Zach LaVine - UCLA (FA); Nikola Vucevic - USC).

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the first round came with the final selection as UCLA freshman Peyton Watson, an honorable mention Pac-12 All-Freshman Team performer in 2021-22, went 30th overall to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

  • Watson becomes the first Draft selection under current UCLA head coach Mick Cronin, and the first First Round pick for the Bruins since Aaron Holiday in 2018.

Christian Koloko, the anchor of Arizona's frontcourt and the 2021-22 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, became the third selection from the Wildcats at No. 33 overall to the Toronto Raptors.

  • With three picks, it marks the fifth time in the modern Draft era Arizona has three-or-more selections (1996, 1998, 2001 [4], 2020).
  • It also marks the first time in Arizona program history it saw three picks go inside the Draft's top 33.

2021-22 Pac-12 First Team All-Conference selection Isaiah Mobley went 49th overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he'll once again team up with his brother and fellow USC Trojan Evan Mobley, the third overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft and an NBA All-Rookie First Team performer this past season.

  • It marks the sixth Draft pick for USC in the last five years under head coach Andy Enfield, the longest streak of selections in program history during the modern Draft era (since 1989).
  • USC is 1-of-3 programs, along with Duke and Kentucky, to have a Draft pick in each of the last five years.

COLORADO sophomore Jabari Walker, the Pac-12's leading rebounder and a First Team All-Conference pick in 2021-22, rounded out the Conference's six picks at No. 57 overall to the Portland Trail Blazers.

  • Walker is the seventh Colorado player taken in the Draft under head coach Tad Boyle, including the fourth in the last six years.
