USC's Gavin Aurilia, Krando Nishiba Set For 2022 U.S. Amateur

Aug 14, 2022

Junior Krando Nishiba and sophomore Gavin Aurilia will tee off in the 122nd U.S. Amateur on Monday (Aug. 15) in New Jersey and will be joined by Trojan grad and amateur star Stewart Hagestad.

The huge field, 312-strong, will play 36 holes of match play Monday and Tuesday with the top 64 players advancing to a match-play bracket from Wednesday to Sunday.

The Trojan trio will open play on a pair of courses in Paramus, N.J. Aurilia will tee off at 8:45 a.m. ET at the Arcola Country Club, Hagestad a minute earlier at the Ridgewood Country Club while Nishiba will hit his first ball at Ridgewood at 12:45p ET.

Hagestad is playing in his 13th U.S. Amateur, by far the most in the field. Aurilia and Nishiba are making their debuts.

Hagestad earned his spot via a number of means, including his win at the 2021 U.S. Mid-Am as well as his appearances for the U.S. at the 2019 and 2021 U.S. Walker Cup Teams. He's also well inside the top 50 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Aurilia secured his berth by tying for second at the Sewailo Golf Club site at 9-under 135. In fact, freshman Mahanth Chirravuri finished one stroke out of a playoff for the fourth and final spot at the same site.

Nishiba claimed his spot as part of a three-way tie for first at 3-over 145 at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club site.

USC All-American Sam Randolph won the title in 1985. He was also medalist that year. Fellow USC great Craig Stadler won the title in 1973.

More recently, All-American Sean Crocker made it to the 2015 semifinals before falling to eventual winner Bryson DeChambeau. Hagestad reached the quarterfinals in 2020, a career-best, after making the round of 16 in 2018.
