Utah claims third straight Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Championship

Mar 18, 2023

FINAL RESULTS

WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH — Much like the regular season, the 2023 Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Championship at the Maverik Center was close all the way through the last rotation of the evening. When the final scores were tallied, Utah was crowned the 2023 Champions, securing the title for the third straight season and becoming just the second team in Pac-12 history to win three or more consecutive titles and the first since UCLA won four straight from 1987-90. The Utes have now won six of the last nine Pac-12 women's gymnastics championships dating back to 2014 (2020 event was canceled).

After coming up just short on an outright regular season title last weekend, the Utes made sure they weren't sharing anything Saturday night, posting a 197.925 to top UCLA (197.850), California (197.825) and Oregon State (197.200) in the second session. The Red Rocks used an outstanding all-around performance by senior Maile O'Keefe and a first-place vault by senior Abby Brenner to lead them to the victory.

Oregon State scored a 99.00 through two rotations to take the lead at the halfway point, but Utah took control after a stellar run on floor with all five scores at 9.9 or higher, led by O'Keefe's 9.95. Brenner put an exclamation point on the win with her 9.925-winning vault in the final rotation to help secure the victory.

Olympic Gold Medalist and OSU sophomore Jade Carey captured the all-around title for the second consecutive year, posting a score of 39.750. Carey is the fourth Pac-12 gymnast to win back-to-back all-around championships and the 12th gymnast all-time to win two during a career. O'Keefe finished second for a second straight year, scoring a 39.675, followed by UCLA freshman Selena Harris in third at 39.625.

Carey also collected a pair of individual event titles, tying for first on floor with fellow Olympian Jordan Chiles of UCLA with a 9.975 and tying for first on beam with California's Mya Lauzon at 9.975.

Utah's O'Keefe and Cal's Lauzon tied for third on the floor with a 9.950 while there was a seven-way tie for third on beam at 9.950 (Utah's O'Keefe; UCLA's Harris; Stanford's Breanna Neault, Arizona State's Emily White; California's Gabby Perea; and Utah's Cristal Isa and Kara Eaker).

Brenner took the trophy on the vault with five-way tie for second (Utah's McKenna Smith; UCLA's Chiles; Cal's Lauzon; Utah's Jaedyn Rucker and UCLA's Chae Campbell).

In the first session Arizona State took the top spot and finished in fifth overall (196.700) with Washington and Arizona tying for sixth (196.375) and Stanford in eighth (195.875).

The 2023 NCAA Selection Show will be this Monday, March 20 on NCAA.com as Pac-12 gymnastics teams await their fate for NCAA Regionals.
