Oregon claims 2023 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament title, Arizona's Chase Davis Named Most Outstanding Player

May 27, 2023

SCOTTSDALE – The 2023 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament came to an exciting end Saturday night at Scottsdale Stadium with 6-seed Oregon holding off 8-seed Arizona 5-4 to claim the title in the second year of the event. In front of a crowd of just over 4,000 at the Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants, the Ducks and Wildcats traded offensive punches, but it was Oregon's relievers that stymied the conference's best offense for the one-run victory.

With the win, the Ducks secured the Pac-12's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament, while Arizona will await its fate when the 64-team bracket is announced Monday morning.

After the Wildcats struck first in the top of the third inning on a Nik McClaughry RBI single, Oregon matched that, tying the score at one on a Colby Shade single that scored Rikuu Nishida. The Ducks took the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth, but the Wildcats climbed back into it, scoring one in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the six to even the game at three apiece.

That's when Oregon's Jacob Walsh sent a towering fly ball over the right center field wall to give the Ducks the lead for good in the bottom half of the sixth. Tanner Smith drove in an insurance run in the seventh to make it 5-3, which proved to be important when Arizona's Tony Bullard cut the lead to one on a homer to left field in the eighth. The Wildcats had some life in the top of the ninth after a McClaughry two-out single, but a Chase Davis fly out to left ended the game as the Ducks ran out to celebrate their first Pac-12 tournament title.
