CFP DEBUT:  The first CFP rankings of the 2023 season were released this week with the Pac-12 having 6 teams listed, tied with the SEC for the most of any conference.  Dating back to last season, it’s the 5th straight CFP rankings with 6 Pac-12 teams included.

Washington was the highest ranked Pac-12 team at #5 with Oregon right behind them at #6.  It’s the 3rd time the Pac-12 has had 2 teams in the Top 10 of a season’s initial CFP rankings (2019, 2022) and only the second time the Pac-12 has had 2 teams in the Top 6 of any CFP rankings (Nov. 11, 2014:  #2 Oregon & #6 Arizona State).

BOWL BOUND:  The Pac-12 is 1 of 2 conferences with 6 teams already bowl eligible for this season:  Washington, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah

  • Needs 1 win:  Arizona

  • Needs 2 wins:  Colorado, Washington State

  • Needs 3 wins:  California

  • Needs 4 wins:  Stanford

INSIDE MAN:  This season, the Outland Trophy is giving out a national player of the week for the first time to the top offensive/defensive lineman.  This week, Arizona State center Leif Fautanu became the first ever Pac-12 winner as he helped guide the Sun Devil offense to over 500 yards and 5 touchdowns in their win over Washington State.

SEMI-TRUCKIN’:  3 national awards named the semifinalists for their annual awards this week with the Pac-12 well represented on each:

    Jim Thorpe Award (Top Defensive Back) - 2 of 15 semifinalists

WALK ON:  The Burlsworth Trophy, given to the most outstanding former walk-on, announced its nominees for 2023 with the 11 of the 12 Pac-12 schools represented.
