Apr 15, 2024

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Arizona Wildcat alums Esmery Martinez and Helena Pueyo were both selected in the 2024 WNBA Draft on Monday. Martinez was selected in the second round with the 17th pick by the New York Liberty. Pueyo was selected in the second round with the 22nd pick by the Connecticut Sun. They are the 12th and 13th picks from Arizona in the WNBA Draft, respectively.

The two picks mark the third time in program history that Arizona has had two players selected in the same draft. LaKeisha Taylor and Elizabeth Pickney were chosen in the 2002 WNBA Draft and Aari McDonald and Trinity Baptiste were chosen in the 2021 WNBA Draft.

Martinez spent two years with the Cats, earning All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention distinction in 2023 and 2024. She garnered Pac-12 All-Defensive Team Honorable Mention accolades in 2024. In her final season with Arizona, she averaged 11.1 point, 6.3 points, 2.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She scored her 1,000th career point and gathered her 1,000th career rebound in the 2022-23 season.

Pueyo concluded her Arizona career as the Wildcats' leader in the career steals with 312 and in single-season steals with 110 (2023-24 season). She was a Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honoree in 2023 and 2024 and was named to the All-Pac-12 Team in 2024. Over the course of her time at Arizona, Pueyo played 3,874 minutes, the fifth-most by a player in program history. She led Arizona in steals per game for her final three seasons and led the Pac-12 in steals per game in her fifth year.

WNBA training camps will begin April 28.
