BOULDER, COLO. – The OREGON Ducks and WASHINGTON Huskies were still on the course when play was halted due to darkness, but the Ducks maintained a three-stroke lead over Washington during the first day of competition at the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship at Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colo.

Weather controlled the first round of the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championships. After a 30-minute frost delay, the teams began play under sunny skies and temperatures that approached 50 degrees. Fifteen of 24 groups completed the first round before play was suspended at 1:51 p.m. MT as officials ruled there were non-dangerous conditions at the time – light, but blowing snow, which was sticking to the greens when it fell. After a 32-minute delay, play was resumed.

While six teams were able to complete the second round, Oregon, Colorado and UCLA have two holes remaining to complete their second round. The other grouping of Arizona State, Washington and Washington State will need to complete four holes on Saturday morning before third round play begins.

Oregon held a one-stroke lead in the team race after the first round with a score of 4-over (354) behind the play of senior Wyndham Clark (1-under 69), sophomore Edwin Yi (even-par 70) and sophomore Ryan Gronlund (even-par 70). WASHINGTON trailed the Ducks by one shot at 355 (+5) as sophomore Carl Yuan posted the low score of the first round with a 2-under 68, while senior teammate Corey Pereira shot 1-under 69.

During the climate-challenged second round, which saw temperatures dip to 36 degrees and snow arriving as darkness crept in, Oregon and Washington continued to duel for the top spot on the leaderboard before the Ducks posted a three-stroke lead when play was halted.

“Anytime you are leading you have had to have done something well,” said Oregon coach Casey Martin.  “It didn’t feel like we were playing that great, just that it was so brutal out there. Felt more like we were trying to stay alive and get it to the house. The guys battled and I was proud of them and hopefully we will be able to finish this thing up in the next couple of days.

When asked about the playing conditions, Martin added, “We talked about it leading up to the championship. We had a really rough winter in Oregon, very wet.  I said we are going to be the best prepared team for this because we have had to deal with some adversity.  I told the team, as difficult as it has been, let’s use it to our advantage. Fortunately, they’ve been kind of use to it, maybe not the snow and sleet, but they’ve been use to the rain and some adversity. Sometimes, even though it’s difficult, it can really benefit you.”

Clark and Yuan were leading the individual race at 2-under when darkness put an end to the first day of competition. USC senior Rico Hoey was the leader in the clubhouse at even-par 140. Hoey, California sophomore Collin Morikawa, and Arizona State freshman Blake Wagoner posted the low score of the second round with a 2-under 68.

Pending overnight weather conditions, which the local forecast calls for snow, the second round will be completed starting Saturday morning at 10 a.m. MT. The third round will being at 12 noon MT. The Championships will conclude with the final round on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. MT.
