Women's Tennis Falls to California at Pac-12 Championships

OJAI, Calif. – The top-seeded UCLA women's tennis team was bested by No. 4-seed California 4-2 Friday afternoon at Weil Tennis Academy.

The No. 8 Bruins (18-5) collected the doubles point and later got a singles win from Tian Fangran. The 10th-ranked Golden Bears' (18-5) points were recorded by Valentina Ivanov, Mao Mushika, Berta Passola Folch and clincher Jessica Alsola.

UCLA's 50th-ranked doubles combination of Kimmi Hance and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer downed Alsola and Ivanov 6-3 on the second court in the day's first completed match. No. 14 Tian/Elise Wagle dug itself out of a 2-5 hole to lead 6-5 on the top court, but the point would be decided on Court 3. Ahmani Guichard and Sasha Vagramov outlasted Passola Folch and Katja Wiersholm 7-6(3) to decide matters.

No. 52 Ivanov topped No. 25 Hance 6-0, 6-2 on the second singles court, pulling Cal level. The Bruins were lifted back into the driver's seat by No. 35 Tian, who knocked off No. 41 Hannah Viller Moeller 6-1, 6-1.

The Golden Bears registered victories in the other three finished contests. Passola Folch next defeated Guichard 6-3, 6-2 on Court 6. Mushika got the best of Wagle in a 6-4, 6-3 result on Court 4. Finally, Alsola overcame No. 65 Bianca Fernandez 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Lutkemeyer fought back from a 1-5 third-set deficit on Court 5 to even her match with Lan Mi, but would not finish.

The NCAA selection show is scheduled for Monday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m. PT.
