No. 1 Stanford fends off No. 3 Colorado to win 2021 Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Tournament title

May 8, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. — No. 1 STANFORD secured its second Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse Tournament title after defeating No. 3 COLORADO on Saturday at Stanford Stadium, 17-10. With the victory, the 2021 Cardinal became the first Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse program to win both the regular-season title and Conference tournament championship in the same season.

In a rematch of the 2018 Pac-12 Championship game, the Cardinal pulled away with a 9-1 first-half run. Senior attackers Ali Baiocco and Katherine Gjersten each found the back of the net five times, posting their ninth and fourth hat tricks of the year, respectively.

Baiocco, one of four Stanford players named to the All-Tournament team, earned MVP honors after scoring nine goals, dishing out two assists and collecting two ground balls across wins over Arizona State and Colorado.

Saturday’s performance was a career afternoon for Stanford’s sophomore goalkeeper Kara Rahaim, who had a personal-best 14 saves, her first game with double-digit stops. Rounding out the Cardinal’s All-Tournament performers were midfielders Genesis Lucero, who won nine of the team’s 17 draw controls on Saturday, and Mikaela Watson, who finished with six goals and three assists in two wins.

Colorado attacker Sadie Grozier led all players with a career-high six goals, recording her eighth hat trick of the season, while Zoe Lawliss added two second-half scores for the Buffaloes. Colorado was represented by Grozier, junior midfielder Devon Bayer and senior goalkeeper Julia Lisella on the All-Tournament team.

Stanford, ranked No. 13 in the most recent Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, receives the Pac-12’s automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The selection show for both the men’s and women’s lacrosse brackets will air on Sunday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. MT on ESPNU.
