Pac-12 announces 2022 Pac-12 wrestling honors

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference announced today the 2022 Pac-12 wrestling honors, as voted on by the Pac-12 coaches. ARIZONA STATE redshirt freshman Cohlton Schultz (285) was selected Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year, Sun Devils' redshirt freshman Kyle Parco (149) earned Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, and OREGON STATE head coach Chris Pendleton garnered the Pac-12 Coach of the Year accolade.

2022 PAC-12 WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Cohlton Schultz, R-Fr., ARIZONA STATE (285, Parker, Colo.)

  • Earned the No. 1 seed at the Pac-12 Conference Championship and No. 2 seed at the 2022 NCAA Championship in Detroit following a perfect 16-0 regular season. 
  • Won the Pac-12 heavyweight title for second straight year and earned second NCAA All-America honor after finishing second to Minnesota's Gable Stevenson. 
  • Recorded a 22-1 record this season, with lone defeat coming in the NCAA heavyweight final against Stevenson, and owns a career record of 47-4. 
  • First Arizona State wrestler to win award since 2019. 
  • Also won the Gorriaran Award at the NCAA Championships, given to the wrestler with the most pins in the least amount of time (2 pins, 2:17) and is presented by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

2022 PAC-12 FRESHMAN/NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Kyle Parco, R-Fr., ARIZONA STATE (Danville, Calif.)

  • Transfer from Fresno State completed his redshirt freshman season - his first at Arizona State - with a 24-4 overall record.
  • Came into Pac-12 Championships seeded No. 1 with a regular-season record of 19-1, then captured the Conference's 149-pound title to improve to 21-1 entering NCAA Championship. 
  • Finished eighth at the 2022 NCAA Championship to earn his second NCAA All-America honor. 
  • Becomes the fourth Arizona State Freshman/Newcomer of the Year in program history.

2022 PAC-12 COACH OF THE YEAR: Chris Pendleton, OREGON STATE 

  • In just his second season as a head coach, guided Oregon State to 4-1 record in Pac-12 duals and 8-3 mark overall. 
  • Led OSU to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championship in Detroit, the Beavers' best finish since 2013 (8th). 
  • Oregon State also finished runner-up at the Pac-12 Championship, just 0.5 points behind champion Arizona State (115.0-114.5). 
  • Coached four All-Americans: Grant Willits - 4th (141 lbs.), Hunter Willits - 7th (157 lbs.), Brandon Kaylor - 8th (125 lbs.), Devan Turner, OSU - 8th (133 lbs.)
  • First career Pac-12 Wrestling Coach of the Year honor.
