SAN FRANCISCO - Stanford University will be the host for the 2023 Pac-12 Sustainability Conference, taking place over two days from Wednesday, June 21 through Thursday, June 22. The event will begin with opportunities for various campus tours at Stanford, followed by an early-evening welcome reception, while the second day will feature a high-level symposium of expert keynote speakers as well as high-level breakout discussions.

A key pillar of Pac-12 Team Green, the first-of-its-kind sustainability platform of the Pac-12 Conference and its member universities, overall goals of the Pac-12 Sustainability Conference are to elevate approaches and enhance sustainability efforts within collegiate athletics departments, design new collective initiatives and share best practices for utilizing college sports as a platform for achieving environmental progress.

The 2023 Pac-12 Sustainability Conference will represent the seventh annual in the event’s history, the fifth in-person after previously being hosted by Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA (2017), the University of Colorado Boulder (2018), the University of Washington (2019) and the University of Utah (2022).
 

One of several highlights on day one includes an opening leadership plenary, which will focus on the departmental intersectionality in the field of sustainability. Several leaders who represent many different sectors at Stanford will discuss how sustainability is being implemented in their work and how they are collaborating with one another to drive sustainability forward.
 

The program also features keynote addresses from Chris Dickerson, former MLB outfielder and Co-Founder of “Players for the Planet,” an organization dedicated to empowering athletes to channel their influence into eco-consciousness in ways that inspire the present and future of sports toward environmental stewardship. Pioneering neuroscientist, biotechnology executive and President of Stanford University Marc Tessier-Lavigne will present an opening keynote address on Wednesday, June 21, and Jessica Murfree, Visiting Assistant Professor and ACES Faculty Fellow from Texas A&M University, will present her keynote address on Thursday, June 22 at 1 p.m.. Her research examines the effects of climate change on sport, namely the social and legal implications of extreme weather and climate risks, and environmental injustices faced by historically marginalized groups in sport and recreation.
