Bears Extend Winning Streak To Five

Apr 16, 2024
Junior Rodney Green Jr. continues to heat up for the Golden Bears. He hit his 10th home run in the win over the Dons.

BERKELEY – A five-run fifth inning was more than enough as the California baseball team extended its winning streak to five games following a 6-3 win over visiting San Francisco on Tuesday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Cal (21-14) finished the night with nine hits, two from Rodney Green Jr. Green went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in on an RBI double in the third and a solo home run in the fourth.

The Golden Bears utilized six pitchers on the evening who kept USF's (17-20) offense quiet until the sixth inning. The Dons finished the night with seven hits, five coming from the sixth inning on. TJ Rogers drove in all three runs for USF, two coming on a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Cal had great opportunities to score in the first two innings. Jarren Advincula walked with one out in the first and moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt but was stranded there. In the bottom of the second, the Dons got two quick outs but pitcher Blake Shepardson loaded the bases before eventually getting out of the jam by striking out PJ Moutzouridis.

In the bottom of the third, the Bears broke through. The rally started when USF's relief pitcher Cal Amborn (0-2) hit Lomavita with one out. Lomavita moved into scoring position via a wild pitch. Green Jr. smoked a double to the left-cent gap to score the game's opening run. The raly continued with RBI singles from Peyton Schulze and Dominic Smaldino. A walk to Alec Ritch loaded the bases for the Bears and ended the day for Amborn. Cal added two more when Carson Crawford walked with the bases loaded and Moutzouridis got hit by a pitch.

Cal scored its final run in the fourth inning on the home run from Green. It was his 10th of the year and 29th of his career. He is two shy of cracking Cal's career top-10 list.

The win went to reliever Andres Galan (3-2). The junior went four complete and faced just one over the minimum. He scattered two hits and a walk, did not allow a run, and struck out five. Austin Turkington got the start and pitched a scoreless inning. The loss was charged to Amborn who failed to get out of the third, allowing four hits, five runs, all earned, with a walk and two hit batters.

Christian Becerra closed it out pitching a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the season. He allowed a base hit but struck out a pair.

Advincula went 1-for-4 with a walk to extend his reached base safely streak to 26 games. Schulze went 2-for-5, he has now reached base safely in 19 consecutive games. Freshman Dominic Smaldino went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, he notched his first collegiate hit in the bottom of the second inning. Crawford went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Cal returns to action on Friday when #5 Oregon State comes to Stu Gordon Stadium for a three-game series. Friday's game is slated for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch and will be streamed on Pac-12 Insider.
