No. 2 Cal Looks To Retain Schoch Cup

Apr 18, 2024
The Bears are looking to retain the Schoch Cup for the third straight year.

BERKELEY – The No. 2 California men's rowing team will host No. 3 Washington in the annual battle for the Schoch Cup on Saturday morning at the Redwood Shores in Redwood City. This marks the 112th all-time meeting between the two programs in a storied series that dates back to 1903, with the Golden Bears having won the most recent two matchups.

"The squad has had a good couple of weeks of training and the crews are really starting to gel well," head coach Scott Frandsen said. "As we build towards the Pac12s and the National Championships, this is a big weekend for us. The guys are excited to see where we are on April 20 and to build off of that."

At last year's duel at the Montlake Cut in Seattle, Cal took four out of five races to retain the Shoch Cup – earned by the winner of the varsity eight race – for the second straight year. The Bears took both the V8+ and 2V8+ races, although both were extremely close, as they were decided by one and three seconds, respectively. Cal also won the 4V8+ and freshmen 8+ races while Washington won the 3V8+ matchup.

"I think this is one of the biggest rivalries in the sport of rowing, as it goes back 100-plus years," Frandsen said. "It's usually the winner of this duel, or both crews in the duel, that are setting the speed for collegiate rowing. The rivalry makes us better and keeps us on our toes. While we have an idea of how fast we are or how fast we could be, it's that dose of reality, as you get into that third 500 in that big race against Washington, that shows how fast you actually are."

All races will be live streamed and live results will be provided.

Cal had last weekend off after sweeping the Pac-12 Challenge and San Diego Crew Classic the previous weekend, which included varsity eight wins against No. 9 Syracuse, No. 15 Wisconsin, and No. 18 La Salle.
