Cal Posts 4 Program Top 10s On Day 2 Of Mt. SAC Relays

Apr 19, 2024
Mason Mangum is now the 5th-best high jumper in Cal men's outdoor history.

WALNUT – The California track & field team was out in full force on Friday, with no fewer than 43 athletes competing in the Blue & Gold at Hilmer Lodge Stadium for the Mt. SAC Relays.

Cal's men's long jump squad, entering the weekend ranked in a tie for third in the nation, received a massive boost from top performers Mason Mangum and Jason Plumb. Mangum, a senior, added over a foot to his wind-legal PR to place third at 7.80m (25-7.25) and make his debut on the team's outdoor top-10 list, claiming the No. 5 spot to pair with his indoor No. 3 entry. Plumb, only a sophomore, finished one spot behind him with a four-inch PR of 7.77m (25-6); that mark tied him with alumnus Ken Smith for eighth best in program history. The male triple jumpers – both freshmen – also did well: Jeremiah Bolaños added nearly a foot to his personal best, posting a leap of 15.19m (49-10), while Obi Nwafor improved his own wind-legal personal record to 14.59m (47-10.5).

The Bears' other field events featured four top-three finishers. Freshman Ashanti Elie earned the first Cal win of the day with a clearance of 1.65m (5-5) in the women's high jump "B" section; much later, senior Skyler Magula posted a mark of 5.35m (17-6.5) in the pole vault elite "B" section, one place behind unattached teammate Tyler Burns' 5.55m (18-2.5). In the "B" section of the men's high jump, junior Riley Knott tied for third place at 2.03m (6-8); in the "C" section, freshman Victor Ezike Jr. tied for second with a mark of 1.97m (6-5.5).

Over on the track, junior Asjah Atkinson continued her standout outdoor campaign by lowering her 100m hurdles PR to 13.56, finishing third in the contest and clinching sole possession of the sixth-fastest time in program history. She followed that up with a personal best of 11.99 in the 100m, topping all Cal women in the standings. On the men's side, classmate Isaiah Shaw recorded his own personal best of 46.34 in the 400m, finishing second in the race and making his debut at No. 9 on Cal's outdoor top-10 list while shaving .22 seconds off his old time; in the same event, senior Josh Keller posted his own substantial PR of 47.59 - .34 seconds faster than his previous best. The 4x100m relay squad of Chase Williams, George Monroe, Mangum and David Foster earned another win on the year with a combined time of 39.56, while junior Iyan Godwin rounded out the Bears' top-three finishes with a second-place PR of 1:49.96 in the 800m.

Senior Garrett MacQuiddy raced unattached in the 1500m elite section; like fellow unattached competitor Burns in the pole vault, he clinched the win with a time of 3:42.50.
