No. 10 Water Polo Falls in MPSF Tournament Opener to #5 USC

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – In the opening match of the MPSF Tournament, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo battled with No. 5 USC but were unable to move onto the semifinals in a 11-6 defeat. Petovary netted two goals accounting for her 28th multi-goal game of the year, and her 35th straight game scoring a goal for the Sun Devils.

The MPSF Player of the Year's two goals brought her total to 122 on the season. Sanne Keizjer scored her fifth goal of the year, giving her 10 points on the season. She also tallied eight saves in the game giving her 200 saves this season.

Jasmijn Dikmans, Ashley Ferguson and Sophie Shorter Robinson all tallied a goal apiece in the contest. Millie Quin recorded two assists to bring her season total to 42, which is tied for fifth most in a season in program history. In addition, it brings her points total to 111 points, which is tied for fourth most in a season in ASU history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two quick goals by USC, Jasmijn scored the first goal for the Sun Devils with 4:17 remaining in the first quarter. Then Shorter-Robinson and Petovary added two more goals to give ASU a 3-2 lead at the 2:33 mark. 
  • She would later score her second goal of the game off another penalty shot, giving ASU a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Trojans would respond with three unanswered goals in the second quarter, taking a 5-4 lead at halftime.
  • Coming back from the half, each side traded possessions until USC scored the only goal of the quarter with 2:45 in the third to take a 6-4 lead entering the fourth frame.
  • Ashley Fergison and Sanne Keijzer would give the Sun Devils two more goals, but the deficit was too much as USC would extend their lead to five in the final frame.

UP NEXT
The Sun Devils will compete in the fifth place game of the MPSF Tournament facing either San Jose State or Indiana on Sunday. Ball drop is slated for 7:00 a.m AZT/10:00 a.m. EST and coverage can be seen on Overnght streaming and live stats available on 6-8 sports.
