Ducks Win Final Pac-12 Matchup With OSU

Apr 28, 2024

CORVALLIS — Oregon turned the tables on Oregon State to win their series finale at Goss Stadium on Sunday, with the Ducks using lights-out pitching and timely hitting to win the final Pac-12 Conference matchup between the two, 7-1.

The Ducks (29-14, 12-9 Pac-12) got their fourth straight quality start on the mound, as Kevin Seitter took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a solo home run. Oregon's offense produced seven runs on five hits thanks in part to two titanic home runs from Mason Neville, and the Ducks played clean baseball while capitalizing on three OSU errors.

"I really felt like the team played well for three days, and we really have to credit the Oregon State pitching — they pitched very, very well and kept us at odds," said UO coach Mark Wasikowski, whose team outscored OSU on the weekend in aggregate, 9-7, but needed to salvage a win in the series Sunday after 2-0 and 4-2 defeats. "I thought our pitchers pitched well. Overall the entire weekend with both of those two teams, it's really high level baseball."

Seitter (5-3) faced the minimum in five of the first six innings, and didn't allow a hit until the leadoff batter in the seventh. He struck out nine and walked four.

"It's been up and down for all of us, but the most important part is that we stay consistent and we stay to our process —we nail that thing every single day," Seitter said.  "We're going to take it one day at a time, play our game and try to get to 1-0 every day."

How It Happened: The Ducks matched their run total from the first two games of the series in the first inning Sunday. Chase Meggers reached on an error, Neville singled to start a three-hit day, Jacob Walsh made it 1-0 on an RBI single and Jeffery Heard reached on another error to plate another run.

Neville hit his first home run of the game in the second, for a 3-0 lead. The Ducks then doubled that lead in the fourth — after back-to-back walks opened the inning, Bryce Boettcher moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Meggers made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly. Neville followed with his second homer of the game that sailed beyond 400 feet, a two-run shot that made it 6-0.

"He's a talented player; getting him going is huge," Wasikowski said. "We kind of got stuffed the first two nights; we weren't able to really get a whole lot of offense going. And we really like our offensive team, ironically. You make those two statements and they're polar opposites, but we've got a lot of talented players."

Seitter finally allowed a run on the homer to open the seventh, but he pitched around a two-out walk to finish out that inning and his outing overall. Ryan Featherston allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three over the final two innings.

Boettcher provided some insurance with his sixth homer of the season in the ninth. Neville now sits at 10 homers on the season, after his first multi-homer game of the year.

"I love the rivalry; there's nothing better than playing in front of a fan base like this," Neville said. "The animosity, whatever you want to call it, it's just a great atmosphere. We knew that coming in and we knew what we needed to do. Great pitching performances, I think on both sides the whole weekend, and today we kind of just stacked more quality at-bats together and kind of got into a little bit of a rhythm. And so yeah, it was a good win."

Up Next: Oregon will host the Beavers in a nonconference game at PK Park on Tuesday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
