BJ Omot Joins Golden Bears

Apr 29, 2024
BJ Omot averaged 14.8 points per game across two seasons played at North Dakota.

BERKELEY – BJ Omot, a former All-Summit League first-team selection, has signed to play for the California men's basketball team, head coach Mark Madsen announced Monday. Omot, who played his freshman and sophomore years for North Dakota, will join the Golden Bears for the upcoming 2024-25 season and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Omot, a 6-foot-8, 185-pound forward from Mankato, Minnesota, has averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in his career while starting all 65 possible games played in two seasons with the Fighting Hawks. He earned the All-Summit League first-team honor and a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 12 second-team following a breakout sophomore year that saw him average 16.7 PPG & 4.2 RPG in a team-leading 35.2 minutes per game.

"BJ's skills, size and length make him a very impressive basketball player and a great addition to our program," Madsen said. "He has guard-like skills in a 6-foot-8 frame and his high-flying, explosive abilities make him a natural scorer on the wing. BJ has huge potential and we can't wait to have him and his family wearing Blue and Gold."

Omot's 16.7 PPG as a sophomore ranked fifth in the Summit League and his 29 blocks led North Dakota. He scored 20-plus points 13 times – including a career-high 30 points at Kansas City – and posted a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double against Elon. Omot was named the Summit League Player of the Week in December 2023 following a 21-point, eight-rebound performance at Nebraska.

An immediate impact for the Fighting Hawks as a freshman in 2022-23, Omot led the team in scoring (12.0 PPG) and blocked shots (31). He scored double figures in 22 of 33 games, including a season-high 20 points against Oral Roberts, and stuffed the box score with 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks at South Dakota.

Omot is a 40% (274-of-685) career shooter from the floor and owns a 72.4% career clip at the free throw line.

Omot starred for Mankato East High School (Mankato, Minnesota), amassing 1,118 points and 398 rebounds in his prep career while earning an all-state first-team selection as both a junior and senior.
