Cal Signs DeJuan (DJ) Campbell

Apr 29, 2024
Transfer guard DeJuan (DJ) Campbell signed with the Golden Bears following two seasons played at Western Carolina.

BERKELEY – DeJuan (DJ) Campbell has signed to play for the California men's basketball team, head coach Mark Madsen announced Monday. Campbell, who spent the past two years at Western Carolina, will join the Golden Bears for the upcoming 2024-25 season and has two years of eligibility remaining.

A 6-foot-2, 205-pound guard from Hampton, Virginia, Campbell played in all 66 possible games – including 45 starts – throughout his first two collegiate seasons with the Catamounts and helped them to their first 20-win season since 2009-10 this past campaign. Campbell averaged career highs in points and rebounds per game as a sophomore last season and has career averages of 8.2 PPG and 3.2 RPG.

"DJ plays a tough, intense brand of basketball that will make our program better right away," Madsen said. "He's a skilled player with or without the ball in his hands, and is a strong shooter who made 47% of his 3-pointers in conference play last year. DJ carries himself professionally on and off the court and knows what it takes to win – we're excited to welcome him and his family to Bear Territory."

Campbell averaged 11.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 29.1 minutes per game in 2023-24 and shot 52.9% (146-of-276) from the floor, as well as 41% (25-of-61) from beyond the arc. The guard scored in double figures 21 times – including 12 points in wins against both Notre Dame and Vanderbilt – and went for 20-plus twice in a three-game span against VMI (20) and Wofford (23). His 23-point effort against Wofford included a 4-of-5 clip from 3-point range.

As a freshman, Campbell logged 22.0 minutes per game while averaging 5.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He registered six double-figure scoring efforts, four of which came in Southern Conference play.

Campbell made a statistical jump in multiple categories from his freshman to sophomore campaigns – improving field-goal percentage, 3-point field-goal percentage, points per game, rebounds per game and total steals. He's a 75.6% (90-of-119) career free-throw shooter.

Campbell was the Peninsula District Player of the Year and a Virginia all-state second-team selection as a senior in 2022 at Kecoughtan High School (Hampton, Virginia). He was a 2,000-point scorer for the Warriors and recorded a 60-point game in February 2022 of his senior season.
