Bruins Sit Fourth After Day One at NCAA Regionals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 4 UCLA women's golf team shot a 3-over 291 in the opening round of the NCAA Las Vegas Regional at Spanish Trail Country Club on Monday.

The Bruins sit fourth overall at 3-over, 11 strokes back of No. 9 Arkansas, who sit atop the leaderboard after day one. The Razorbacks lead second-place No. 19 Florida State by three strokes and third-place Purdue by four strokes. Arkansas' Kajal Mistry is in first place overall at six-under after her opening round 66.

Three UCLA golfers finished at even-par or better on day one, led by Kate Villegas, who shot a two-under 70. Villegas opened her round with birdies on both holes five and seven to put her at -2 through the front nine. After adding another birdie and a bogey to her round on the back nine, she finished at two-under for the day. Villegas finished with three birdies, 14 pars, and a bogey to open play at NCAA Regionals.

Zoe Antoinette Campos and Caroline Canales fished two strokes behind her and shot 72 to finish at even par. Campos, who was sitting at two over with five holes to play in her opening round, birdied 13, 15, and 18 to put herself at even par heading into the second round. Canales was consistent all day for the Bruins, finishing with 14 pars, two birdies, and two bogeys on Monday. She capped her round with a birdie on 18 to put her at even-par for the tournament.

Natalie Vo finished five-over for the day and tied for 50th overall, while Meghan Royal finished one shot behind her at six-over and sits in 56th place after day one.

UCLA tees off for round two tomorrow morning, beginning on hole 10 at 8:00 a.m. (PT).
