STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Mariah Mazon earned her 17th victory this season, becoming Oregon State softball's strikeout leader on the way, as the Beavers defeated Stanford, 3-1, in game one of the NCAA Stanford Super Regional on Friday evening at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.  

With the win, OSU improved to 38-20 and claimed the first game of the best-of-three series against the Cardinal. The Beavers need one win to advance to the 2022 NCAA Women's College World Series, their first since 2006 and second in program history.

Mazon (17-11) punched out 11 batters in seven innings, surpassing Brianne McGowan in the record books to become the all-time leader in strikeouts with 859 during her career. Mazon and the Beaver defense combined for three three-up-three-down innings, including the final frame to seal the victory.

Grace Messmer broke the scoreless tie in the second inning on an infield single, scoring Frankie Hammoude who reached on a left field line double.

Madison Simon followed that up just one batter later, pushing OSU to a 3-0 lead. Simon connected on a two-run long ball, her second home run during the NCAA Tournament after she hit one against Ohio State to open up the Knoxville Regional last weekend.

The Cardinal got a run back in the fourth frame off one of their five hits of the game. Mazon stopped the Stanford threat in the next inning after allowing a two-out double with a swinging strikeout.
