After coming together as a coaching duo in 2018, California’s Justin Howell and Elisabeth Crandall-Howell have earned their second Coaches of the Year award. After being picked to finish third in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the husband-wife duo led the Golden Bears to their first outright regular season Championship title after spending all but one week in the Road to Nationals top-3, including seven weeks in the runner-up spot. The Bears were perfect in their Conference meets (7-0) and only fell to three opponents during the entirety of the regular season (18-3), earning their highest team score (198.550) and highest individual all-around mark (eMjae Frazier, 39.825) in Cal history. Heading into the NCAA postseason with their highest NCAA Regional seed (No. 3), Cal is one of just three teams in the country with an NQS of 198 or higher (198.180). On January 27th, Crandall-Howell notched her 100th career victory with the Bears, picking up 10 more wins by the end of the season (110-41-2). The two were named the 2022-23 WCGA Co-Head Coaches of the Year and this is Justin Howell’s (222-128-2) fourth time receiving the award (2013, 2016, 2021).
